Super Hot - Indie Game Spotlight

Superhot is one of my favorite indie games of all time. Indie of course meaning it was made by a smaller production team; whereas triple A games are made by companies like Bethesda or Rockstar. Since it is made by an independent group it didn’t have as much funding as Destiny or Fallout would have had, but that’s part of what makes this game unique and beautiful.

The Basics

The game is actually a game within a game. So theoretically the main character is actually you, or at least an alternate reality version of yourself. The game itself is simple, you are a person being attacked by a bunch of guys dressed in all red. Any weapon that you can use to defend yourself is all black, and everything else in the area are different shades of grey. You basically take down everything in your way and move on to the next stage. Oh, I almost forgot to mention, time only moves when you do. If you stand still in the vanilla game time will slow to a crawl, and speeds up once you take an action; be it killing an enemy or simply walking.

The Story

Once you actually dive into the game you get into “secret” stages, ones that are cryptic and devoid of enemies; early on the game even hints to you being in control of an actual person instead of playing a game. In once scene you literally walk up to a red dude that represents you playing the game.

The Exposition

Eventually you’ll unlock more powers, like switching bodies, and you’ll actually get kicked out of the game with a chilling warning, telling you not to open the game or else. All of this is after the game locks you in a cage, making you die within the simulation, or making you do what the system wants before releasing you. You even have to walk your character into where you are playing the game within the game and punch the shit out of yourself. (For context, two of these in game punches kills an enemy). You're officially nearing the end of the game once you see this message. But I won’t spoil any of that.

Bonus Content

There are a few other game modes that you should try out after beating the game. The challenge modes make the game much more interesting and challenging; there’s one challenge where you have to make it through the whole game without dying.

There’s also another update to the game for Halloween, a new challenge called Pumpkin, where the red guys you fight are small pumpkin headed dudes. It’s pretty cool.

There's also endless mode if that's your cup of tea. This additional content kept me playing for a grand total of 20 hours, so it's definitely worth a couple of bucks!

There's an all new version of the game that was released in 2016, this time it's got a different story and utilizes VR! Here's a link to check it out on Steam!

IGN also did an article about Super Hot, feel free to check it out! I think I read this one before I bought the game!
